International 554/564 Tractor

Lang, have you got a 554 lined up, I got to know a bit about them when I bought a 564. Very capable unsophisticated tractor. Aerostart is your friend, or very big batteries. I might have a new glow plug to post your way.

I bought one from a wheeler dealer in Mullumbimby sight unseen delivered to Brisbane for less than I got for the Fergy. He has given me a 3 month free return on it if it fails.

It apparently uses the ether-start method. I have looked up forums and it seems every 554/564 failed in the glow plug department on a regular basis. Wagga Tractors have a conversion kit to put Landcruiser plugs in them. If you have a plug I would sure like to buy it from you.

Please be sparing with the aerostart! I really would seriously consider the Landcruiser glowplug conversion, it works really well, and replacements are cheap. The Toyota type do seem to take a little longer to get hot though.
A brisk cranking speed (good battery) aids starting immensely.

Then there was the MF old style pre heater. A can of diesel connected via a small tube to drip onto a glow plug inside the intake manifold. Return fuel line topped up the can ready for next use and were fairly reliable from what I have heard.
Wagga tractors are good to deal with too.

Yeah, reckon that was a "KI-Gas" idea, early Mazda copies of Perkins engines had the same idea, fuel dribbling onto a wire loop which turned the diesel into almost a gas, used to work quite well on engines with pre-combustion chambers, later engines with direct injection didn't seem to have the same problems.

I used to work as a tar baby laying hot mix and they had a case W6 rubber tyred loader that would not start without encouragement. We only had a diesel soaked rag lit and stuffed up the intake manifold to kick them off.

Dave the Ki-gas was a different system and used on the early Standard 23 diesels in the TE type Fergies.. The one used in the Rerkins engines dropped fuel onto a glowing element , igniting it and the flame is sucked into the manifold. Hard not to start with a fire in the intake.

I stand corrected te the Ki -Gas, werent they the ones that had the Freeman-Sanders developed head??

Not my pick to replace the Fergie. They have a terrible reputation of had starting. Why not get something with a P6 Perkins. Main fault is the alloy water
pump. Replace that with a cast pump and you have a good "Reliable " machine. Starts first time every time. No comparison with 554. Personally would not touch one. Just my thoughts.
