Rig 4 in Yemen. All up weight around the 200 ton mark. Diesel/electric oil rig, good for drilling down to 10,000 feet. Easy to move too. The power trailer on the left has 3 Cat 3512 gen sets on it, 2 Sullair compressors and the SCR house where the power is changed from 600 volts AC to 600 volts DC. With 6 oilfield trucks, the whole rig can be moved 50 km in about 12 hours.

Easy to move with the old Western Star, 3406 Cat, Clark transmission, 4 speed aux box and Clark rear end, but you still need a dozer to pull it over the jump-ups. Too much sand there and it bogs down easy. 45 ton over the king-pin. On the flat on a hard gravel road it will cruise at around 30 kph.

It's the Western Star getting a bit of help from a local dozer. This photo didn't come out on the last post.

This happens when they put a 25 ton load on a single drive/tandem trailer. Too unstable. Those shale shakers (blue things on top of the tank) go around the 12 ton mark and are normally taken off before moving the tank. The Rig Manager wasn't the brightest light there (Eastern European) and he bolted when I got back there to straighten this circus act out.

The worse thing that can happen. They use the semi/winch truck setup which is OK but they gotta remember to slack the winch line right off (and chain down the load) before they take off. Going round a sharp bend, the winch line pulls the load across the trailer until gravity takes over. Result is 30 ton of mud pump laying in the dirt. This one was lucky, it only took 5 days to repair the drive chain boxes, replace sprockets and chains and things like that. Total damage bill for this disaster was around the $200,000 mark (includes 5 days downtime at $25,000 per day)

Finally up and running and a chance to catch up on some much needed rest. This well was drilled down to 9,000 feet in 14 days. Crude oil flow from this well was around the 4000 barrel/day mark, (this was when crude oil was about $110 US a barrel).

Sand, sand and more sand. Out of the photo are all the military watch towers, guards, cannons and stuff like that. Those guys were very photo sensitive. The military were there to protect us from the Bedouins that roam around. It was pretty safe there though. All we found were a few bullet holes in the crane jib one morning and a 9mm bullet hole in one of the bulk fuel tanks. The valves on the tank were locked, so they improvised and adapted when it came to knocking off a bit of diesel.

Wow, they are some amazing pics Grumpy, Keep them comming. I have been in oil and gas for a few years now on the North West Shelf and have never seen anything on land. I guess whether its land or water it still looks boring after a while. At least we dont have anyone shooting at us.
