I find anger so often goes hand in hand with the Black Dog.

I am sure Swishy did not mean to be offensive, That quote might be a hundred years old from a time when depression referred to your football team losing and did not have the medical connotations of today outside a hospital ward.

It is certainly a terrible condition and I have several deceased mates from this cause and I am dealing almost daily with two more who are seriously at risk. Having said that, nearly every word has several meanings and context is everything. You can still be depressed without sufferng from medical depression.

How many words now can not be used because one of their several meanings or uses offends somebody. The little boy's quote obviously referred to a "toughen up princess" situation and was in no way referring to the scourge of the black dog.

If it will settle some offense I would be happy for it to be changed but that is just me , others will think differently.

It maybe not to far of the mark, BUT there is a bunch of how's why's and why nots, mixed up in the mix that makes depression such a deep hole and everyone is different, thanks any how Swishy it doesn't hurt to talk about it

I can relate Dave, decades dealing with it myself, and the vicious cycle of addiction. It gets pretty dark, but I have found answers thankfully.

The massive prevalence of depression and anxiety means it has been studied a lot too, so there is lots of great info on the mechanics of it nowadays. Which is great for those of us who are mechanically minded, if we can see what's broken, we can work out how to fix it. A complex problem can be simplified with the right workshop manual.

I have been involved in helping run a number of depression and anxiety recovery programs over the years. Might be time to start a thread on the subject, I don't think it would be out of place, restoration from depression is at least as important (to understate the matter just a little) as restoration of old machinery.
