Gday,

I’m replacing timber on an old try.
I’m getting timber milled for the job.
I have messmate, red box or yellow box. Just wondering which would be best?
I plan to us 1 1/4 for the deck and 4x2 for the crossmembers.
Does that sound strong enough?

Thanks

I would say Messmate is the better timber out of these three

It grows quicker so although not as hard it will be more flexible and less likely to get a hole punched in it

As to thickness, if it isnt dried or seasoned I reckon 1" 1/4 will be to thin as when it dries or seasond it will shrink a fair bit amd will be lucky to be a inch thick

So if it's green I would go for 1" 1/2 to allow it to shrink

4x2 should be plenty

Thatsy 2 bobs worth

Thanks Paul.

1"1/2 sounds like a good idea. I reckon messmate looks better but thought it might be too soft but more flexibility makes sense.
It will be a summer project and I’ll put up some photos when it’s done.

Grey Box almost as strong as Iron bark but easier to work with, green timber you need to allow for shrinkage.
