Hi Swishy
I have a question. For a long time I had guys tell me that you should not do 'Jake Changes' as it would/could damage the engine. I therefore never mastered the art of swapping cogs quickly on a hill for fear of a workshop visit..........but just what would it damage?

I've only ever driven n put in time Bhind the wheels of Screeemin GM n Mack power plants
A screemer to drive iz, U max out n drive tho it'z stolen
n they B happy working in the higher rev band with about 300-400 rev drop B tween cog swappin
so no real benefit use n the jake to kill revs coz the screemer looses them revs just as fast
but ifn U wanna skip shift say 4 holes tiz alright n haz no effect on screemers n all the above mentioned twaz for 2 stroke screemin GM/Detroits (not the 4 strokerz)
The Mack came out with there own V: of the Jake named Dynatard on the Macks they don't use a micro switch on the clutch pedal. We had a F model Mack 300 coolpower with a 6 speed Mack cog box n U did half the gear changes as to a Screemer n RR this 6 speed twaz the next best thing to auto. The Maxidyne had a huge operating torque range
so U drove upto the govonor @ 2100rpm, the next gear twaz not available till U were down to 1300rpm but use n the dynatard to kill off them revs reel quik ment U could just about pull the the joystix straight thru, with the Dynatard kill n them revs.
When we 1st got this Mack we were worried about how it would handle the big float work when needed, but twaz no worries it did a gr8 job n the only problem twaz U ended up cum n off hills in to higher gear n use the brakes a lot more or the next cog down twaz too slo
So to answer the Q: Yes by all means use the jake to change cogs if there iz an advantage
(Speakin Screemer n Mack only)

Great info thanks Swishy.
I have a mate in the mudflap industry and I had him make some Commer mudflaps a while ago that I sold off. I have since been thinking of getting him to tool up the 'Jimmy Diesel' logo because I think that they would look good on the back of the Dodge I've bought but I'm now starting to think that if I could find someone who has Jakes for my 4/53 that they don't want that I should get mudflaps made with the original Jacobs logo on it.
Do you reckon that they'd sell??

I'd have to 'donate' them to projects then Swish. Apart from that, I operate a non-profit organization. That's why I can only afford to do up a Commer

Swishy, many years ago I came off an ERF with a Cummins 380, Jake brake and a RR 13 speed and was given an R-model Mack with a 285 Maxidyne, Dynatard and Mack 6-speed box.
At first I couldn't work out what the Dynatard switch was for as it certainly didn't do much in the slowing down department, not at all like a proper Jake brake, but then I realised that it was just hooked up to a little tape recorder under the dash which played a Jake brake recording when you switched it on, a sort of confidence booster noise.
Later I talked to a Mack mechanic about that switch and he said that the switch was actually to help you change up a gear while going uphill and it really didn't have enough grunt to slow you down going down hill. He said the story about it operating a tape recorder was just a myth but that Mack would supply free handkerchiefs to hold out the window and this would give you more slowing down effect than the Dynatard switch. He was right, too.
Cheers, Vic

RE: didn't do much in the slowing down
Th@z where U need th@ in b tween cog
one cog to hi next one to lo
Also U went backwards power wize from Crummins 380hp to may B 300hp
If the dynatard is working correctly it should slo U down ruffly in the same time it takes U to accelerate with the same load weight n conditions
U Tanker Yankers all the same
Comparing oranges n apples
