Close enough, with no clues needed. I would have said Ingebyra for the sign. This is known as Barry Way, and didn't exist until ~1960. Two local roads were connected: The NSW one ran from Jindabyne to Ingebyra (a grazing homestead, not a hamlet). The Victorian one ran from Buchan through Gelantipy, Suggan Buggan, W Tree and more. Most of the route followed Snowy River. This was my first time on the road; thereafter it became my regular route from Burwood to Jindabyne (dep. 15.30, arr. 1.00) for a weekend of skiing. It was a very lonely road: we could go through after dinner and see perhaps two cars in 3 h. There were lots of kangaroos, but not a breed which jumped in front of the headlamps. I have been through in falling snow, in snow a few days old, and on a wet fine surface after recent grading. I was at the wheel when the car slipped off the road. Just after we got ourselves back on, the only truck which I have ever seen in the middle section came by: a rabbit or roo shooter in something antique, straight out of a Ken Maynard cartoon.
I did think that I had gone for mean level with this one, as it isn't a trucking route. I guess that many 4wd people use it by day to access very-minor tracks.
Way back, the only way for the Victorian schoolteacher at Tubbut or Deddick (not on this road, and predating it) to get back to Melbourne for holidays was via Canberra and Goulburn, and an extra two days were granted to allow for the lengthy journey.
Wentworth - Broken Hill isn't quite so lonely: Coombah roadhouse is half way (130 km), and that is how I took my motorcycle to Broken Hill (140 km fuel range).
I reckon that, after helping himself to a can/bottle/cask, Paul should leap in next.
Roderick.
