Replacement bolts / nuts / screws was created by Wacker
Hi just wondering where you guys source replacement nuts bolts screws and other fixings?? Is there an online source in aus that is good? Also, is replacing old fixings with stainless a common practice? 68 CDJ bedford, so imperial throughout!
Thanks. Wacker

Probably the most important thing is to be aware of is that sometimes their are reasons why they used a certain bolt for a certain fixing.
For decoration bits probably doesn't matter what you use. But for anything structural or has a load you should replace it with what it had. So I wouldn't use a stainless bolt where a high tensile bolt was. I don't think Stainless is generally very strong but I guess like most things their are many different varieties. (not even sure of how available they would be. Doubt would be much range)
But always go to a proper bolt place. Don't just get them from a hardware shop as they aren't really designed for engineering in mind and are generally only for building uses.
Also consider that many bolts in a truck are generally fitted bolts. And might be hard to get new bolts of the right size for proper fitment.

Most stainless bolts are equal to mild steel , look at head of bolt for lines eg,3/5/or more and replace with same.Peter

I use Classic Fasteners in SA and highly recommend them. I struggled to find correct nuts/bolts and screws for the rebuilding of my 52 Desoto truck but had no problems finding all that I needed from Classic...

The beddie is likely to be unf and unc throughout which are easily obtainable. Blackwoods might have a branch in Perth (if not they do mail order), but in any event you need to shop at a place that can do reasonable pricing. For example, Bearfast in Tamworth NSW sells you a box at wholesale rate, then any thing after is also sold at wholesale. For important bits use high tensile grade 5 or 8 (better) bolts, nyloc nuts and hardened washers. Some stainless can be used in stress situations but you need to be certain that the grade of stainless (there are lots of stainless steel alloys and what is good for a saucepan won't keep your wheels on for long) is right for the application, so as has aleady been said - use stainless for trim etc but play safe on the rest.
The only thread form which is being phased out by engineers supppliers is whitworth (bsf went ages ago) and as a result can cost three times as much as unc which looks identical (but isn't)

G'day as said it should be unf/unc but it may also be whitworth not a great hassle as whitworth and unc are interchangeable EXCEPT for 1/2" as there is one thread per inch (tpi) different one is 12 the other 13 IIRC.
If in doubt take a sample in to the bolt place and get them to check

HI Wacker
Try Coventry Fasteners on the corner of Welshpool Rd and Furnace Rd in Kewdale..........I worked for John Holland Rail in the West a few years ago and they maintained many Track Maintenance Machines...American,British and European and we never had a problem getting nuts/bolts or fasteners from them.

Depends on where in Perth you are, Cov's as already mentioned have a good selection and they have more than 1 fasteners store. Blackwoods yes but not sure on pricing
Yellow pages or Google should bring up more suppliers, I am in Rockingham and have a local fastener place that has pretty good stock and reasonable prices.
