Is there any damage to the core? It may just need a probe and clean.

Jon, Yeah that's the main problem, it leaks about 1/3rd up from the bottom, you can see the stain in the photo.

Your core will be better than any replacement you can afford as it is made from real 100% copper. A leak like that can be repaired by parting the gills and soldering the damaged tube. A repair man will give it an acid bath first to clean off all the old paint and dirt on the outside and to clear any blockage inside. The only parts that you need to consider replacing are the steel/iron hose connections and steel strapping.

The company in NZ is Replicore... www.replicore.co.nz/ . I had a mate get a Dodge radiator (with new core) from there and from memory it cost around $1500. You might want to try Greg from FTRS in Brisbane... www.ftrs.com.au/fueltanks/fueltanks.php ...if you don't have any luck closer to home.

Thanks Mammoth, Deadly Dave & Desoto Dave.

Just picking up on Mammoths comment, the repairers I've spoken to reckon they can't repair the core because it's an old cellular construction?
cheers

Pierre,
That looks like an ordinary tube type radiator, if the tanks are off and leaking tubes blocked off and rest of it sound it should be useable. Had a similar one done providing I'd take the risk as they weren't prepared to warrant the job.
I recently had Chev four truck and '29 Nash car radiators repaired with new cores on my tanks in Northam WA $800 each, no mention of difficulty in getting cores to suit.

When I got the ASW done, it helped that one of the cores I had still had the tag on it with the core model number (?) on it - that number was still in the book.

An old, long-established repairer would have old books with the right info, since that was a common truck.

Any tradie who says he can't repair something because it is an old design is worth steering well clear of. Paying for someone elses education (as is the case here) is an expensive option with often poor outcomes. Last year I sent my ancient leaking Case backhoe rad to Inverell for repair (being poked by sticks doesn't do them any good LOL) and came back looking like new for around $100. Just keep looking for the right bloke, these days unlikely to be found in a city.
