Road Boss still working..

I've had a couple of Road Boss's and used to drive one for TNT and I've never seen a badge inside the door.
The 13 speed knob you can get brand new ones from Air Brake Services on Beatty rd Archerfield, or I think Rocklea Truck Spares might have the genuine ones still.
Yours is a little bit later model than mine looking at the inside of the cab, mines got a horrible Western Star steering wheel as well, I've been keeping my eye out for a White 4000 one, they are the same as the first of the Road Boss's so I can get it pearled.
I don't think I've got the bottom bit of the grill, Ill have to have a look, that bit was missing on mine when I got it and it took some looking to find another one. From 79/80 they changed the bonnet and the grill and surround are different.
The truck should have a build data plate on the passenger side seat base, though that and the compliance plate are missing on mine.

Thanks again bigcam, the only id is the compliance plate - there is no build plate found on the seat bases. I know where air brake services are, again thankyou for that info.
Yours must be the beautiful red one that I have seen on other threads on this forum, geez that one looks great.

Mine is a 1979 model according to the compliance plate, so it should be almost the same as yours. Although I have not seen another with a full instrument cluster as is in my old girl - temp gauges for each diff, gearbox, and engine oils, even a clock that is still 100% accurate and bears the White logo, as do all the gauges.

I'm still hoping that Jake Brake may get back to me with what he finds in my chassis number, that will be really interesting.

Even when the Boss' were new and you drove them for TNT, still no badges on the inside door trims eh? Well I wonder what the dimples are in the vinyl ? They just all the world like where badges would have been..

Anyway, thanks again for all your help so far and I'll try not to annoy you guys too much. ;)
cheers, Bretto

Swishy - I just love they way you write, spins me out! :D
The steering wheel is one of them aftermarket types where you can change the hub to suit all sorts of jiggers, Mack wheel you say, Ahhhhh ;D

Bigcam, if you look at the interior pictures above , just below the rego label on the inside of the passengers side door trim you will see the dimples I am talking about.

No badges were ever on the door where those holes are, somebody must have tried fitting something there at one time.

Here's an original '79, it's about 6 months old in this photo.

Hi Greenie,
My, you sure look young in that pic. :D

OK, now I have to concede that I have been chasing a dead end for almost 2 years. I just thought that there were badges there. But you have put an end to that, thanks.

I find it amazing that in every White of similar age that I have looked at, no 2 dash layouts are the same., not even yours.

Differences seem to be in the speedo position (left or right), type or brand of speedo, other gauges fitted, etc, etc - there just does not seem to be a standard or common layout. Do you know why??

I also seem to have a problem with my old chook eating the right front tyre all the time - can I ask for advice in this section or should that into the working trucks section that I just found on this forum?
cheers,
Bretto ;)

Yeah, I in fact had an alignment about a year ago to the day, but the tyre still gets eaten up even after that alignment. Now if it were toe-in, it would wear the insides of both front tyres.
If it were the king pin worn, then there would be movement and it would wear the inside of one or the other tyres.
And a loose wheel bearing chews the livin s%^t out of the outside of the tyre.

But nooooo, this is completely different!

The right front tyre (drivers side) is doing the weirdest thing.

Both front tyres were new (brand new Dunlop SP360) in December, I have done 3,000km on them.
The left front (kerbside) is wearing even and has plenty (like new) tread.

The right front has only about 1/2 the tread left - it is half worn out in 3,000km !!!!!!

When I spin the wheel/tyre, it appears that there is a massive flat spot or put better a section of the tread that is worn more than the rest of it. I have never locked the brakes on the old chook EVER!! This extra worn section is more then 3mm lower than the rest of the tread.

Could this be ovality in the brake drum????

But then I find when I look at the tread face, all the tread blocks are chamfered inwards (high on the ouyside, low on the inside) AND on top of that the rubber tread has marks like you find on a racing slick - very fine little lines of rubber that look like they have been cooked.

The brakes don't grab, and don't lock on that I can feel. Could a faulty booster and an oval drum cause this?
What about the angled tread?
Ahhhh - at wits end and costing me a front tyre each 6,000KM
Help - Ideas - Suggestions!!!

Hi Roadbossman i teach Heavy Vehicles at TAFE and worked on Roadbosses at Clutha for 2 Years as a mechanic, and one of the most overlooked areas is the drive axle alignment. If the drive axles is out align it effects the steer tyres.

What i get the boys to do as a prac exercise is place a straight edge 90deg across the chassis rails, use a plumb bob mark on the flat floor, then measure back to the center of both drive axles. The drivers side should be set back (longer) about 5mm so that it steers up the camber of the road. ;)

Check for loose pitman arm on the steering box also.

Check out my post on Clutha Coal plenty info on the White Roadboss. :)

All the Road Boss's I've had, the front spring pins are loose in the hangers, The one I had years ago, one of the pins fell out and the front tyre hit the battery box, luckily it was on a job site at the time. I've bolted angle iron off the Bull Bar mount plate on mine so that there is no way the pins can fall out. It might be worth checking the pins in yours to make sure your not getting movement there to.
