Put a multimeter across the battery when running. If it reads 13.5v then it's not a 6v system. Generator will have the voltage stamped into it, regulator as well.

Well that's done it, make it 12 volt now, easiest way to tell what voltage it was is to check a globe, new starter and alternator, generators are not a great if you are using it for short runs.

Never seen the pinion break before, that's a new one!
Parts from 6 and 12 volt starters will interchange up to a point, if you find a half trashed spare. I have had to do it.

Any Inter 6 cyl starter will fit and work ,right up to the last 1970s Lucas and Bosch types .............the best one is the Lucas M45G used on the 1960s motors .

I’ll just get a m45g then what alternator do you recommend? My generator doesn’t charge anyway. Just pulled down and cleans will assemble today and test

Before you put the new starter motor in wind the ring gear around with a jimmy bare and make sure you haven't got a couple of teeth missing, there has to be a reason for the starter to self-destruct.
